Multi-scale and qualitative analysis of stoichiometric algae models in the absence or presence of bacteria

Brief Introduction to Speaker:

Dr. Hao Wang is a Professor at the University of Alberta and the Faculty Research Advisor at the Faculty of Science. He is an editor for four mainstream journals. He has received many awards such as NSERC Discovery Accelerator Supplement Award, FGSR Great Supervisor Award, Josephine Mitchell Mentoring Award, Early Career Award, NSERC Early Career Researcher Supplement Award, and substantial amount of research grants. In addition, Dr. Wang has published over 70 peer reviewed journal papers and books, with most in mainstream journals. He has supervised more than 30 researchers including postdoctoral research fellows, PhD students, MSc students,undergraduate students, and academic visitors. Dr. Wang is leading several important projects such as greenhouse gas emission from oil sands industry, ecological stoichiometry, memory-based animal movement, and COVID-19 predictions.

Abstract:Algal blooms are becoming a global concern due to the increasing prevalence of eutrophication. Often, algae and bacteria interact, within the well-mixed epilimnion and spatially heterogeneous hypolimnion, in a loose commensalistic way. Here we develop and analyze stoichiometric models for algal dynamics and for bacteria-algae dynamics. The algae-only dynamics exhibit rich transient behavior, and the driving biological mechanisms are studied and understood via a multiple time-scale analysis. There are three dynamical scenarios determined by the basic reproductive numbers of algae and bacteria. We use these models to make specific predictions about how the relative balance of algae and bacteria should change in response to varied nutrient and light availability. The bacteria-algae model successfully reproduces empirical respiration data. Competition of bacterial strains with low or high nucleic acid contents will be briefly discussed.
