Assessing reproducible networks in the brain during natural sensory stimulation

Abstract:Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data exert challenging demands on novel analysis methods when subjects are constantly exposed to natural sensory stimulation. This study proposed useful statistics based on intraclass correlations (ICC) for assessing within- and between-subject reproducible networks in the brain for processing continuous streams of natural sensory stimulation. In the empirical study, fMRI data were collected in 30 subjects (15 males, averaged age 22.50±3.46) who received the auditory stimulation involving sound clips of human voices and animal vocalizations under eyes-closed and –open conditions. The ICC statistics suggested that the stress modulation and language networks in the limbic and cortical structures, respectively, were engaged during auditory stimulation and showed great variability among subjects. The network for regulating visuomotor control was sensitive to the eyes-closed and -open conditions, and highly reproducible across subjects.
